EXCLUSIVE: BATMAN 3 TEASER POSTER!!!1

August 17, 2008

The dust has hardly settled on The Dark Knight ($400 Million and counting!) yet fans are already looking forward to the next (as yet untitled, as yet unwritten, as yet unplanned) film in the series. Who will the villain(s) be? Will Robin show up? Will Nolan open up Gotham to more than one female character?

Armed with pretty solid Photoshopping skills, one intrepid fan has designed a teaser poster for his dream sequel – one where Batman faces off against Zodiac The Riddler in a David Fincher-esque landscape. I know it’s fake, but the possibility of this one coming to pass feels real enough. My pants are wet.

Fun With Strangers

August 1, 2008

My relationship with good advice is antithetical at best. Sure, I’ll try to maintain a healthy diet – right after I finish this Cinnabon, then destroy the dollar menu at McDonald’s. Does anyone want Papa John’s? Reading with a light on is for suckers, or the rich. Get plenty of Vitamin C? OMFG don’t tell me how to live my life, conformist. Deeply ingrained stubbornness means I tend to do the opposite of what’s right or appropriate. It should come as no surprise, then, to know that I’m always game for hanging out with total strangers.

Granted, these were movie-going strangers. And they seemed really nice! Setting the scene: my friend and I were leaving Loews after seeing American Teen. It’s quarter after midnight or so; hardly late, of course, but generally time for the working world to get to bed. Not, it turns out, the forces of destiny. Three guys approached us outside the theater, frantically asking if one of us would like a free Dark Knight IMAX ticket. One of their group failed to show up. I paused to think about their offer. YES, I wanted to see the movie, but for a third time? With strangers? Probably trannies or communists? One of whom was wearing a bandana? Find out what happens next after the jump!

Do Not Go Gentle Into That ‘Dark Knight’ (Part Two)

July 23, 2008

The fun continues with a close examination of opening night psychology. Fanboys, we’re under the microscope.

It should come as no surprise that I was part of the midnight crowd. 10:30 crowd, even, given the time the party posse and I headed down to Lincoln Square to wait outside. The line was huge, snaking around 68th St. all the way to Amsterdam – not an exciting prospect. It was made worse by the fact that we had each unknowingly bought tickets to separate theaters. While I give credit to AMC employees for running a remarkably tight ship on opening night, I found it kind of ridiculous that they wouldn’t accept us all into one theater. Left with no other option but to trade for the tickets we needed, I was quickly forced into action. For a while, I looked like an idiot – barking at strangers, asking them to check their ticket stubs and possibly – please? – trade one theater for another. I got a lot of skeptical looks. Even aided by the usher I dragged along, some people were still convinced I was trying to scam them. Do people do this? Eventually, I snagged the necessary tickets and we were all able to sit together. It felt only appropriate that it took Batman-esque detective skills to make this possible. (more…)

Do Not Go Gentle Into That ‘Dark Knight’ (Part One)

July 22, 2008

I’ve discovered I have too much to say about this one to keep it contained in a quick post. Part two to follow shortly; my seeking help soon after that, I promise.

Holy shit, dude. If you’ve been anywhere near a newspaper, television, computer (…), or, well, movie theater these past five days you’ll no doubt have discovered that The Dark Knight, the latest entry in the Batman series, kicks astonishing amounts of ass. Delivering fully on the last lines of its predecessor, Knight presents a Gotham teetering on the edge of chaos and dependent on a group of flawed crusaders – one caped, the others in suit and tie – to somehow keep the balance. Gotham is Rome. It’s Baltimore. It’s fucking Sodom. Christopher Nolan keeps us invested not only in Batman’s plight, but also that of Harvey Dent, Jim Gordon, the police department, the mayor’s office, Wayne Enterprises. In many ways the film is less a portrait of the titular character than of the city he’s trying to save; it’s The Wire with a psychopathic clown. (more…)
