The Mets/Phillies rivalry can’t exactly compare to that which exists between Boston and New York but has grown in recent years to become something pretty exciting to watch. Press conference boasts, traded players, and hot-headed fans have all contributed to the mounting intensity felt when these two teams meet. Handled with care, rivalries can electrify a team and propel players toward new competitive heights. Guided by less than sure hands, well…
“They crossed the line.” “You crossed the line first, sir. You squeezed them, you hammered them. And in their desperation they turned to a man they didn’t fully understand.”
Will Edmondson is that man.
A few days ago I wrote about my Philadelphia Phillies, posting a link to the latest Howard/Rollins joint and promoting their chances for a repeat of last year’s dynamite season. Will, a diehard Mets fan, didn’t appreciate my enthusiasm for the boys in red. Nor was he pleased by my criticisms of his team and franchise – among them claims that Shea’s music playlist is ripped from a Washington Heights block party and that Jose Reyes can’t speak English (both are true). In retaliation he posted this little number on his new blog (I know, right?), filled with venom for all things Philadelphia. Like the Joker, his M.O. is escalation. Like Batman, I’ve got no choice but to fight back. Play ball, motherf^@!%r.
Rest assured this violent volley of blog posts will continue, unabated, until one of us cracks. SPOILER ALERT: it won’t be me.
